President's Day Organ Festival Venue: St. Mel Catholic Church
Juilliard-trained organist David Ball serves as Cathedral Organist and Head of Music Ministry at Christ Cathedral in the Diocese of Orange, California (formerly the Crystal Cathedral). A recognized and well-lauded performer, his appearances have been praised by The New York Times, The American Organist, and The Diapason. At Christ Cathedral, David is the primary steward of a variety of instruments, principally the renowned Hazel Wright Organ. His musical contributions underpin the Cathedral's vast array of weekly services and events–following in the footsteps of Fred Swann, David plays, conducts the choirs, and supports the parish’s diverse congregation, all from Hazel’s 5-manual console. David studied organ with Dr. John. A. Romeri and Dr. Paul Jacobs, and his own students have gone on to hold prominent positions and have been accepted to prestigious conservatories, including The Juilliard School, McGill University, Rice, and Yale.
Committed to making organ and choral music widely accessible in 21st-century media, recordings of the Cathedral’s choirs conducted by David and his own organ solo performances on the Hazel Wright Organ can be streamed on platforms including Apple Music, Spotify, IDAGIO, and Youtube. Christ Cathedral’s most recent album is Bring a Torch: Midwinter Songs from Christ Cathedral, including festive Christmas music for organ solo and contemplative carols for organ and soprano. This summer, David and Cathedral Associate Organist Dr. Emma Whitten will perform a program of organ duets as part of the American Guild of Organists National Convention in St. Louis.
